stress

Stress is something that everyone goes through, and people deal with it very differently. According to https://www.stress.org/42-worrying-workplace-stress-statistics, 94% of Americans reported experiencing severe stress in 2019. I am no stranger to experiencing complete burn outs, feeling trapped, and constant restless nights, but I also know how to deal with stress and how to prevent myself from falling into the trap.

Now, believe it or not, I didn’t always know how to deal with stress. I was always told the same things: get plenty of sleep, plan out your day, and always talk to people about your problems. I tried these tactics and it always seemed to result in me not being able to sleep because I kept thinking about what I had to do the next day. So, I started thinking about the activities I love to do when I have free time, which include  working out, listening to music, and hanging out with friends.

Music is a crucial part of coping with stress, since it helps you clear your mind. There have been many times where blasting music and singing along with to a song helped me realize that there is a solution to my workload. Thus, most of the time, I will listen to music while I work. It seems to work for me because while the music is playing my thoughts flow smoother.

Exercising is another way to help relieve stress. The main reason I exercise is to release all of that built-up tension. I find that while I’m exercising I make a mental list of all of the tasks I have to do for the rest of the week. This keeps me organized because at the end of my workout I have a clear picture of what I have to do. Certain types of exercises help me in different ways. For example, running clears my mind,  muscle exercises help me focus, and stretching relieves stress.

Finally, the strategy I find most effective is talking to loved ones and friends. If you keep all of that built-up anger and frustration to yourself then you will literally destroy yourself; this is  something I was taught at a young age. Every time I have a packed week, full of work and deadlines, I consult my mom and friends on what I should do or how to deal with these assignments.

Let’s face it, college is hard and deadlines and assignments will always hit you in the face. The best way of dealing with it is to speak to people and let it out. Release all of your concerns and you won’t feel alone when dealing with this stress.
