Literacy Alive at Middlesex County College

Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society for Education at Middlesex County College will be hosting “Literacy Alive,” a free program on Saturday March 25 from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at Middlesex County College Performing Arts Center followed by a lunch. This is a program for children ages 5 to 10 years old and their parents to encourage a love of reading.

Dr. Melissa Luis, Education Degree Program Coordinator and Advisor for the honor society, said some goals for this event are to promote a love for literacy, to model effective read aloud techniques to parents, and have children engage in arts and crafts activities that are fun but also enhance literacy skills too.

“We also want to provide an opportunity for our MCC education students to create meaningful literacy activities for children and practice running literacy workshops with parents and children,” said Luis.

Luis said the program will include a workshop by Steve Light, author of numerous children’s books such as “Have You Seen My Dragon?,” “Lucky Lazlo” and “Zephyr Takes Flight.”

The children and their parents will attend three workshops during the morning. One by Mr. Light, a literacy session conducted by MCC students in the honor society, and a crafts program in which the children will make a project to take home, said Luis.

“The workshops were designed to encourage reading and to assist parents to teach literary skills to their kids,” said Luis.

Each child will also receive a copy of an autographed book by Mr. Light.

Luis said the event is open to the first 100 children.

Please RSVP using your child's name. Each ticket is the equivalent of one child and their parent escort. Visit www.middlesexcc.edu/literacy to register. Ticket sales will ended on March 15.

Middlesex County Performing Arts Center is located at 2600 Woodbridge Avenue in Edison. Parking for this event can be found in Lot 1.
