Democracy House is a community service program and civic engagement center at Middlesex County College that enlists students on campus to perform different types of community service projects. In return, they are given scholarships. Democracy House members perform services such as feeding the hungry, tutoring and mentoring children and environmental cleaning.

Every year, hopeful candidates apply online, conduct an interview with Democracy House staff members and write an essay in hopes of joining the Democracy House team and making a difference in their communities.

This year 25 new members will have the chance to do that. They will work in conjunction with the partners that Democracy House has made with local non-profit organizations including: Elijah's Promise Soup Kitchen, Roosevelt School, Lincoln School, New Brunswick Center, Rutgers Cook Student Organic Farm and the Salvation Army of Perth Amboy, according to Maria De La Cruz, the Democracy House Coordinator. De La Cruz said that the members need to complete their 300 hours of community service throughout the year, which translates to 8-10 hours a week.

In the upcoming weeks, Democracy House, along with volunteers in the community, plans to have a walk for women's abuse on Oct. 25 with MCC's New Brunswick campus. Oct 25 will also be CEL Day, Community Engaged Learning Day, in which they will lead a group of 39 students between the ages of 11 and 18 to do a community service at Rutgers Cook Student Organic Farm and learn about the environment and the true meaning of organic. They will also pick food from the farm, which will go Elijah's Promise Soup Kitchen.

The Democracy House office is located in Room 003 in Raritan Hall on the Edison campus. If you would like to be a volunteer at any of the events Democracy House is involved in, please visit their website at http://democracyhouse.pbwiki.com.
